PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing iron oxide conquering the problems in a prior art. SOLUTION: High purity iron oxide is produced by the reaction in a stirred aqueous solution between metallic iron in the shape of microshpherical particles, scrap or chip, and mono or polycarboxylic acid satisfying pKa of 0.5 to 6 as for a primary carboxy group, and decomposable into carbon dioxide and water by heating at 200 to 350°C in the air with the metallic iron owing to oxidation from ferrous carbonate into a ferric salt using a reagent selected from oxygen, an oxygen-containing mixture, hydrogen peroxide, organic peroxide and hydroperoxide. In this case, the ratio of acid is 0.03 to 1.5 mol per gram atom of iron, and the weight ratio of water/iron is 1 to 20. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
