PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thermal transfer printer with a friction force measuring function, capable of accurately measuring the friction force between a thermal head and an ink ribbon. SOLUTION: The thermal transfer printer 10 comprises a printer main body 10a with a thermal head 11 mounted on the lower end part A, and supported swayably by a supporting shaft 12, and a platen roller 14 provided facing the thermal head 11, for clamping a printing paper 17 and an ink ribbon 16 together with the thermal head 11. When the printing paper 17 and the ink ribbon 16 are conveyed, the printer main body 10a is swayed by the friction force generated between the ink ribbon 16 and the thermal head 11. A detection part 13 is provided in the vicinity of the right end part C of the printer main body 10a. The swaying force of the printer main body 10a is detected by the detection part 13, and the friction force between the ink ribbon 16 and the thermal head 11 is calculated by the detection part 13.
