PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain sufficient detergency and to reduce the consumption of a detergent by efficiently utilizing the alkaline water formed by an electrolysis as washing water. SOLUTION: The washing machine which makes the alkaline water formed by the electrolysis use as the washing water is so formed that the agitating operation by the alkaline water is performed for the prescribed time in a washing process and thereafter the degree of contamination of the washing water is detected and the use and disuse of the detergent is determined in accordance with the result of the detection.
