PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect a width of a wider sheet-like medium in a compact configuration in a width detecting device of the sheet-like medium which comprises two limiting members mounted on a placing base for placing the sheet-like medium oppositely to each other, movably towards or away from each other through an interlocking unit to be brought into contact with both side edges of the sheet-like medium, and detects positions of the limiting members by sensors, when the sheet-like medium placed on the placing base is brought into contact in a state of being held from the width direction by the limiting members. SOLUTION: This width detecting device comprises a rotation angle detection sensor 3S converting the moving amount of the limiting members 2R into an angle, and generating a signal corresponding the angle, and an auxiliary sensor 4S capable of determining any one of presence and absence of the limiting members within a moving range of the limiting members 2R, as the sensors, and the width size of the sheet-like medium is detected on the basis of the output of the sensors.
