The shaft (3) of a godet roller (1) is carried in bearings (4.1, 4.2) that rest against abutments (5.1, 5.2) in a housing (5). The axial pre-tension between the bearings can be adjusted while running by means of an actuator (6), e.g. a hydraulic, pneumatic, electro-magnetic, or electro-mechanical actuator.
