<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high-accuracy optical pickup optical unit which can be manufactured at a high throughput and to provide its manufacturing method. <P>SOLUTION: A sub-mount 30 (hereinafter called SM) is placed on a master flat plane 71a of an assembly jig 70 and the SM is positioned by bringing its first plane 30a into contact with a second positioning flat plane 72b of the assembly jig 70. A heat sink 40 (hereinafter called HS) provided with a laser diode 50 (hereinafter called LD) is placed on the surface of the SM positioned by the assembly jig 70. A light emitting surface 51 of the LD is brought into contact with the first positioning flat plane of the assembly jig 70 and the light emitting surface and one end face of the SM are positioned in parallel. The HS is fixed to the SM in this state and the SM is detached from the assembly jig 70. The SM is placed on a sub-mount placing surface 24 of a mirror substrate 20. A first end face of the SM is brought into contact with a vertical master flat plane and the first end face and the vertical master flat plane are positioned in parallel.
