PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To inform a user of the number of readable pages in compressing image data obtained by reading a copy at an unfixed compression ratio to store the data in an image forming unit. SOLUTION: The image reader comprises: a means for reading an image to generate image data, a means for compressing the image data at an unfixed compression ratio to generated compressed image data, a means for storing the compressed image data, a control means for calculating the number of readable pages of images from a storing capacity of the storing means, the image size and the image data compression ratio to display the number of readable pages on a display means.
