PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic detecting element the free magnetic layer of which can be controlled appropriately for magnetization even when a track is narrowed and which is excellent in reproducing characteristics, and to provide a method of manufacturing the element. SOLUTION: Since a layer composed of a magnetic material having a small exchange stiffness energy, such as an Ni<SB>a</SB>Fe<SB>b</SB>layer (wherein, a and b are at.%, a >80 at.% and a+b=100 at.%), NiFeX (wherein, X denotes one, two, or more kinds of elements selected from among Mn, Cu, Zn, Ti, Al, Ge, Si, Cr, V, Sn, Ir, Ru, Nb, Sb, W, Mo, Os, and Ta), etc., is used as the magnetic material layer 30 of the free magnetic layer 28, the direction of magnetization at the central part of the free magnetic layer 28 can be changed easily and, accordingly, the magnetic field detection output of this magnetic detecting element can be improved.
