<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader which performs fast response, has high light-utilization-factor, adjusts a shift amount in accordance with electric field intensity, has no change in optical path length in shifting an image formation position and reads a highly detailed image at high speeds. <P>SOLUTION: A solid-state image pickup device 11 receives image light of an original 2 to read an image of the original 2. An optical path deflecting element 12 shifts the image formation position of the image light for the solid- state image pickup device 11 in a main scanning direction. The optical path deflecting element 12 is provided with a liquid crystal cell formed by filling a liquid crystal layer made of chiral smectic C phases forming homeotropic alignment between a pair of transparent substrates, and a pair of electrodes for applying an electric field in the plane direction of the substrates to the liquid crystal layer. A control circuit 15 performs control that multiplies the resolution of the solid-state image pickup device 11 by receiving the light of pixels at a plurality of positions of the original 2 with time division by common pixels of the solid-state image pickup device 11 by shifting an optical path by the optical path deflecting element 12. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO</p> |
