PURPOSE: A surface-modified metal oxide powder having superior spontaneous dispersibility in neutral aqueous solution by isoelectric point of acidic region, and a preparation method of the surface modified metal oxide powder are provided. CONSTITUTION: The method of preparing surface-modified metal oxide powder comprises the process of calcining metal oxides or precursor of the metal oxides at a sulfur trioxide atmosphere at a temperature of 500 to 1,200 deg.C, wherein the sulfur trioxide atmosphere is formed by supplying sulfur trioxide gas to the metal oxides or precursor of the metal oxides or calcining the metal oxides or precursor of the metal oxides under the existence of product of the sulfur trioxide, wherein 0.1 to 5.0 wt.% of the sulfur trioxide or sulfur trioxide product is used for the metal oxides or precursor of the metal oxides, and wherein the sulfur trioxide product is selected from the group consisting of CeO2, Al2O3, ZrO2, SiO2, MgO, MgAl2O4, Fe2O3, TiO2, MgFe2O4 and ZnO.
