PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high pressure discharge lamp having long life and high reliability by controlling the relationship between the outer diameter of a metal pipe and the thickness of a metallic hard solder to reduce occurrence of leakage at a blocked portion, and an illuminating apparatus equipped with this discharge lamp. SOLUTION: The high pressure discharge lamp L1 comprises a translucent ceramic discharge container 1 having a pair of small-diameter cylindrical parts 12, 12 provided communicating with respective ends of a swallen part 11 forming a discharge space, metal pipes 2A, 2A air-tightly sealed on an internal or external peripheral surface of the respective small-diameter cylindrical parts 12, 12 of the discharge container 1, a metallic hard solder 5 air-tightly blocking the pipe 2A at an outside end of each pipe 2A and embedding and supporting an end of an electrode structure 4 having an electrode 42 located within the container 1, and a discharge medium enclosed in the discharge container 1, wherein the relationship between the outer diameter D mm of the metal pipe 2A and the thickness T mm of the metallic hard solder 5 falls within a range of 0.40≤T/D≤0.95.
