PURPOSE: An apparatus for playing a storage medium with recorded and compressed audio/video data and a method for controlling the same are provided to view a broadcasting picture or VCR reproduced picture until compressed video data is decoded and a normal video signal is obtained. CONSTITUTION: A decoder(120a) decodes data stored for playing a DVD(Digital Versatile Disk) to output decoded A/V(Audio Visual) signals. A VCR(Video Cassette Recorder) part(110) outputs an image stored on a magnetic tape. A broadcasting receiving unit(130) receives external broadcasting signals for outputting the same. A control unit(300) controls to output the output signal of the broadcasting receiving unit while the decoder decodes the data of the DVD.
