<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable gain compensation apparatus for estimating a gain tilt amount with an inexpensive configuration with respect to a gain tilt depending on an input power so as to set an optimum gain compensation amount. <P>SOLUTION: The optical input power of each repeater is monitored and transferred toward downstream by an SV light. A repeater provided with a variable gain compensator acquires input power monitor information of the optical amplifier of each upstream repeater from the SV signal. The input power monitor information is compared with a reference value by utilizing the fact that the gain tilt of the optical amplifier is linear to the input power of the optical amplifier to calculate the gain tilt amount of each optical amplifier and decide the gain compensation amount of the variable gain compensator on the basis of the obtained value. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO |
