PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium which has high recording density and the excellent surface smoothness and electromagnetic conversion characteristic and has the improved dropout, and to provide a production method of the magnetic recording medium. SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium has a lower non-magnetic layer containing at least non-magnetic powder and a binder resin on one side surface of a non-magnetic supporting body, has an upper magnetic layer containing at least ferromagnetic powder and the binder resin on the lower non-magnetic layer and has a back coating layer on the other side surface of the non-magnetic supporting body. Therein, the lower non-magnetic layer contains acicular iron oxide hydrate powder as the non-magnetic powder, the average major axis length of the ferromagnetic powder is≤0.1μm and the surface roughness (center line average roughness Ra) is≤2.4 nm. In the production method of the magnetic recording medium, after the lower non-magnetic layer is cured, the magnetic layer is applied and formed. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO |
