PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light-emitting element that completely suppresses entering of oxygen and moisture into the upper electrode and the luminous layer and prevents deterioration by the growth of a dark spot, and has a long product life, and a display device and a lighting apparatus using the same. SOLUTION: The light-emitting element comprises a substrate, a first electrode formed on the substrate, one or a plurality of organic compound layers, a second electrode, and a protection film that covers the first electrode, the organic compound layers, and the second electrode. The protection film has a laminated structure in which at least two kinds of layers having different water vapor permeability are laminated more than three layers, and the outer surface area of each layer is larger than the outer surface area of the layer contacting it on the inner side, and the outermost layer has the smallest water vapor permeability.
