The invention relates to a molecular-biological method for specifically detecting mycobacteria and for differentiating the Mycobacterium tuberculosi s complex and Mycobacterium avium from other mycobacteria in clinical material by means of amplification primers and oligonucleotide probes which are specific to the genus-specific and type-specific regions of the 16S-rRNA gen e of mycobacteria.
