In a control system (<bold>10</highlight>) having a learning mode (<bold>20</highlight>) such that performance limits can be automatically determined for subsequent use during normal operating modes (<bold>40</highlight>), one or more user manipulable controls (<bold>18</highlight>) are provided to allow a user to selectively adjust the previously automatically determined performance limits. In one embodiment the range of adjustment can be limited. The user control (<bold>18</highlight>) can be located in various positions with respect to the control unit (<bold>15</highlight>). In an exemplary embodiment, the control system (<bold>10</highlight>) comprises a movable barrier operating system such as a garage door opener.
