A compound with formula (I) where R<subscript>10 </highlight>is a therapeutically removable nitrogen protecting group; R<subscript>2 </highlight>and R<subscript>3 </highlight>are independently selected from: H, R, OH, OR, =O, =CH-R, =CH<subscript>2</highlight>, CH<subscript>2</highlight>-CO<subscript>2</highlight>R, CH<subscript>2</highlight>-CO<subscript>2</highlight>H, CH<subscript>2</highlight>-SO<subscript>2</highlight>R, O-SO<subscript>2</highlight>-R, CO<subscript>2</highlight>R, COR and CN; R<subscript>6</highlight>, R<subscript>7 </highlight>and R<subscript>9 </highlight>are independently selected from H, R, OH, OR, halo, amino, nitro, Me<subscript>3</highlight>Sn; X is S, O or NH; R<subscript>11 </highlight>is either H or R; and where there is optionally a double bond between C1 and C2 or C2 and C3; and R<subscript>8 </highlight>is selected from H, R, OH, OR, halo, amino, nitro, Me<subscript>3</highlight>Sn, or R<subscript>7 </highlight>and R<subscript>8 </highlight>together form a group -O-(CH<subscript>2</highlight>)<subscript>p</highlight>-O-, where p is 1 or 2. Such compounds may be used in methods of ADEPT, GDEPT, NPEPT or PDT.
