The present invention provides novel compound and their use of formula (I) or a cosmetically acceptable salt thereof as a skin lightening agent wherein in formula (I), A is an optionally substituted aryl or heteroaryl group, Z is C=O, C=S, C=CH2 or CH2, Y is NR<1>, O or S, X is S, SO or SO2, and where R<1> is hydrogen, alkyl, alkylaryl or aryl. The invention also relates to the use of a ring opened derivative of formula (I).
