A hand-operated assembly inserts a bung (14) into the open end (16) of a pipe (12). The bung has a surrounding elastic ring (22) which may be longitudinally compressed, causing radial expansion to seal the pipe end. The bung has two end-plates (18, 20) which are linked by a cam (50) operated pressure rod (28) and lever (36).
