The invention concerns a device for setting up guard rails comprising: a first machine (M) provided with fittings (4) for storing rails and means (5) for handling and transferring them; a second machine (M1) provided with fittings for storing support elements (S) and spacer elements (E) designed to receive the rails, said second machine (M1) having laterally support means (10) for maintaining and positioning aligned substantially parallel to the ground at least two rails transferred from the first machine (M) and means (14) for driving in the support elements; said first and second machines being designed to be coupled at will in aligned position; one at least of the machines including means for propulsion and displacement on the ground.
