A method for purifying polyarylene sulfide, which comprises washing a polyarylene sulfide with a cleaning solution, separating the resulting mixture into a polymer phase (8) containing the polyarylene sulfide and a solution phase (9) containing the cleaning solution, measuring the viscosity of the polymer phase (8) or the difference in density between the polymer phase (8) and the solution phase (9), to detect a liquid level (10) of the polymer phase (8), and taking out the polymer phase (8). Since the viscosity of the polymer phase (8) and the difference in density between the polymer phase (8) and the solution phase (9) are measured by the use of a vibrational process viscometer (7) having a portion (11) contacting with a liquid being made of stainless steal, Hastelloy, Ti or a Ti alloy and a remote seal type differential pressure transmitter (6), respectively, the liquid level (10) of the polymer phase (8) can be detected with accuracy.
