The invention relates to a method and a control device for operating a wide band lambda probe. The oxygen part of an exhaust gas is determined on the basis of the comparison between a Nernst voltage and a nominal value of a reference voltage, and in the event of a deviation, a pump current is fed into a cavity of a pump cell, an electrical voltage applied to the pump cell being regulated in such a way that LAMBDA is equal to 1 in the cavity, and the pump current represents a variable for the LAMBDA value in the exhaust gas. In order to avoid regulating disturbances in the starting phase of the engine or in the cold phase of the probe, the Nernst voltage is maintained, by means of a pre-regulation, at a value which is close to the reference voltage, until the Nernst voltage represents an effective variable for the oxygen concentration in the cavity of the pump cell.
