The alignment device (3) holds a string which may be used in the usual way to guide the bricklayer while laying a course of bricks. Each end of the string may be tied to an arm (8) with grooves (9), projecting from one corner of a rectangular block (4) made of concrete. The arm is attached to one long side (7) of the block. A loop handle (6) is set in the top surface of the block.
