An automotive outboard air bag system (<bold>30</highlight>) is provided in which a belt-like strap (<bold>34</highlight>) is provided at substantially a center within an air bag (<bold>33</highlight>) to extend from an upper end portion (<bold>33</highlight>a) to a lower end portion (<bold>33</highlight>b) of the air bag (<bold>33</highlight>) with sides of the strap (<bold>34</highlight>) being made to extend in a longitudinal direction of a vehicle body, front and rear side edges (<bold>34</highlight>a, 34b) of the strap (<bold>34</highlight>) are connected to an inner circumference (<bold>33</highlight>c) of the air bag (<bold>33</highlight>) to thereby form front and rear constricted portions (<bold>35</highlight>) on front and rear central portions of the air bag (<bold>33</highlight>) , and left and right convexly curved portions (<bold>36</highlight>) which can come into contact with an outer surface (<bold>12</highlight>b) of a windshield (<bold>12</highlight>) and a garnish (<bold>18</highlight>b) of a front pillar (<bold>18</highlight>) , respectively, are provided on both sides of the rear constricted portion (<bold>35</highlight>).
