PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new compound useful as a medicine to inhibit protein functions, more particularly, provide an inhibitor for both of a matrix metalloproteinase and a tumor necrosis factor. SOLUTION: The compound is expressed by general formula (1) (X is a Zn (II) chelating group selected from (CH<SB>2</SB>)<SB>n</SB>OH, (CH<SB>2</SB>)<SB>n</SB>NH<SB>2</SB>, (CH<SB>2</SB>)<SB>n</SB>SH, (CH<SB>2</SB>)<SB>m</SB>COOH, (CH<SB>2</SB>)<SB>m</SB>COOR, (CH<SB>2</SB>)<SB>m</SB>CONH<SB>2</SB>, (CH<SB>2</SB>)<SB>m"</SB>CONH-OH, (CH<SB>2</SB>)<SB>m"</SB>CONH-R and (CH<SB>2</SB>)<SB>n</SB>'O(PO<SB>3</SB>)<SB>m"</SB><SP>(m"+1)</SP>; (n) is 2, 3, 4 or 5; (n') is 2 or 3; (m) is 1, 2 or 3; (m') is 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6; (m") is 1, 2 or 3; and R is C<SB>m</SB>'H<SB>2m</SB>'<SB>+1</SB>or an aryl), preferably 1-[3,4-dihydroxy-5-(2-hydroxyethyl)tetrahydrofuran-2-yl]pyrimidine-2,4(1H,3H) dione.
