Apparatus and method for treating exhaust gases from solid fuel fire places

To clean the exhaust gas and smoke from a solid fuel burner, e.g. a domestic wood fire and the like, a ceramic network is in the exhaust path for the smoke and gas to flow wholly through it. When the burning fuel temperature drops, and during initial firing, the hazardous matter in the emission is wholly or partially deposited on the ceramic material to be burned off. The ceramic netting is of a ceramic foam or in a ceramic textile net structure, or it can be of fireclay or cordierite or sintered silicon carbide ceramic, and can be fitted with an electrical heating system.
