PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a shift position detecting device that performs a display with assured safety even if a range position different from the actual range position is displayed because of a device failure or the like. SOLUTION: In this device, an inhibitor switch detects the on/off statuses of a plurality of contacts. The device also includes a range position switch map setting part where a setting is made not to match a combination pattern when a contact outputs different statuses with the combination pattern of the on/off statuses of the plurality of contacts representing a parking range, out of combination patterns of the on/off statuses of the plurality of contacts representing a neutral range.
