PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To adjust a roughness of a cylinder bore surface by a top dead center side and a bottom dead center side of a reciprocative sliding stroke of a piston when applying a surface treatment to the cylinder bore surface of a cylinder block. SOLUTION: In the surface treating method for applying an etching treatment to the surface of a cylinder bore B of the cylinder block W, the etching treatment is applied to a predetermined area of the cylinder bore surface including a range from a piston top dead center to a piston bottom dead center. Etching states are varied in the top dead center and its neighborhood and the bottom dead center and its neighborhood, contact times of contacting an etchant are varied in the top dead center and its neighborhood and the bottom dead center and its neighborhood, and the contact time of contacting the etchant is set longer in the bottom dead center and its neighborhood than the top dead center and its neighborhood.
