PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent erroneous determination of a reference position of a rotation signal, and to favorably carry out various types of engine control. SOLUTION: An ECU 10 is provided with a microcomputer 11, a signal processing circuit 12, an input circuit 13 and an output circuit 14. Rotation of a crankshaft of an engine is detected by a crank angle sensor 21, and an NE signal comprising a pulse train per predetermined angle interval and having a reference position with a wide pulse interval in midway of the pulse train is generated by a detection signal of the crank angle sensor 21. In the ECU 10, a pulse interval is measured in every effective edge output of the NE signal, and if a pulse interval is larger byαtimes or more than a pulse width right before it, it is determined that the pulse interval is the reference position. If a pulse interval right after the pulse interval determined to be the reference position is larger by 1/βor more than the pulse interval, the determined reference position is vitiated.
