<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact and inexpensive light source provided with a capability to provide a plurality of modulated wavelengths in a CWDM (coarse wavelength division multiplexing) or DWDM (dense wavelength division multiplexing) optical communication system, which is required in an industrial world. <P>SOLUTION: A multiple wavelength output light source (110) is disclosed. The multiple wavelength output light source (110) comprises a laser device (210) having a plurality of output wavelengths (λ<SB>1</SB>to λ<SB>4</SB>), and a modulator (232, 234, 236 and 238) associated with and configured to modulate each wavelength (λ<SB>1</SB>to λ<SB>4</SB>) independently. The plurality of modulated wavelengths (λ<SB>1</SB>to λ<SB>4</SB>) λ can be separated (218) prior to modulating and then be combined (252), after modulation, onto a single optical fiber (104).
