<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a silicon carbide-based porous compact and a method for manufacturing the same whose contact area is increased for contacting with a fluid such as a gas. <P>SOLUTION: In the manufacturing method, the silicon carbide-based porous compact is manufactured by adding a molding aid and water to a mixture containing 70-97% of silicon carbide particles having 1-150 μm average particle diameter, 2-20% of metal silica particles having 1-50 μm average particle diameter, 0.5-5% of carbon source particles in terms of carbon, and 0.5-15% of silicon oxide particles in terms of SiO<SB>2</SB>and 80% of the total amount of the silicon carbide particles, metal silica, carbon source particles and silicon oxide particles, and kneading to obtain a kneaded material, extrusion molding the kneaded material by using a mold to obtain an extruded molding having cells each with 1-100 mm<SP>2</SP>cross section, and after that, heat treatment the molding in nitrogen for carbonization of metal silica. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO |
