The method involves feeding air to a combustion chamber via a choke flap associated with an induction pipe and via at least one inlet valve with a variable valve lift controler for influencing the valve lift. The cylinder air filling is determined from the air mass flow (MSHFM) via the choke flap depending on the choke flap setting (WDK), the air temperature in front of the choke flap, the engine revolution rate (n) and the inlet valve lift. Independent claims are also included for the following: a control element for a controller for an internal combustion engine and an internal combustion engine, especially for a motor vehicle.
