<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To overcome such a fault of a reflective liquid crystal display device that visibility drops extremely in dark ambient light because of a decrease in the amount of reflected light to be used in display and to solve another problem that the visibility of a transmissive liquid crystal display device drops under very bright ambient light in fine weather. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device is provided with a liquid crystal layer 5 interposed between a substrate 1 and another substrate 2; a first polarizing means 6 disposed on a surface opposite to a liquid crystal layer 5 of the substrate 2 and a second polarizing means 9 disposed on a surface opposite to the liquid crystal layer 5 of the other substrate 1. The liquid crystal display device is provided with: a reflective display area and a transmissive display area separately formed in a single pixel; a first optical retardation plate 7 and a first optical compensation layer disposed between the first polarizing means 6 and the liquid crystal layer 5; and a second optical retardation plate 10 disposed between the second polarizing means 9 and the liquid crystal layer 5. Retardation remaining in the liquid crystal layer 5 of the reflective display area is compensated by the first compensation layer in performing black display. The first optical compensation layer is formed on the same layer as that of the first optical retardation plate 7. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO |
