摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To overcome such a fault of a reflective liquid crystal display device that visibility drops extremely in dark ambient light because of a decrease in the amount of reflected light to be used in display and to solve another problem that the visibility of a transmissive liquid crystal display device drops under very bright ambient light in fine weather. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device is provided with a liquid crystal layer 5 interposed between a substrate 1 and another substrate 2; a first polarizing means 6 disposed on a surface opposite to a liquid crystal layer 5 of the substrate 2 and a second polarizing means 9 disposed on a surface opposite to the liquid crystal layer 5 of the other substrate 1. The liquid crystal display device is provided with: a reflective display area and a transmissive display area separately formed in a single pixel; a first optical retardation plate 7 and a first optical compensation layer disposed between the first polarizing means 6 and the liquid crystal layer 5; and a second optical retardation plate 10 disposed between the second polarizing means 9 and the liquid crystal layer 5. Retardation remaining in the liquid crystal layer 5 of the reflective display area is compensated by the first compensation layer in performing black display.
