PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing high-purity chitosan oxide provided with high hydrophilicity and water solubility in a wide pH range and a method for further efficiently producing chitosan oxide containing a uronic acid residue in which a primary hydroxy group of the residue of glucosamine or N- acetylglucosamine being a constitutent mucosaccharide of chitosan is selectively oxidized by using a safe reagent under a mild condition with controlling a side reaction. SOLUTION: The method for producing chitosan oxide comprises introducing a substituent group to the amino group of glucosamine being the constitutent mucosaccharide of chitosan, oxidizing the glucosamine with an oxidizing agent in the presence of an N-oxyl compound catalyst and an alkali metal bromide or an alkali metal iodide, then eliminating the substituent group modifying the amino group, consequently selectively oxidizing carbon at the 6-position in N-acetylglucosamine or glucosamine being the constitutent mucosaccharide of chitosan or the pyranose ring of glucosamine into a carboxy group or its salt.
