PURPOSE:To strengthen case hardening, and to improve abrasion resistance, by applying a electroless nickel plating on the surface of a rack made of aluminum. CONSTITUTION:The movement of a head 11 is performed by rotating a stepping motor 12, and meshing a pinion 13 with a rack 15. The main spindle of the stepping motor 12 is made of a stainless steel, and the rack 15 is made of the aluminum to fit for the coefficient of thermal expansion of a carriage 14, and a frame, etc. In the titled device, the electroless nickel plating is applied on the rack 15. It is possible to fit the coefficient of thermal expansion of the rack for other parts by the use of the aluminum, and also, the abrasion resistance can be improved by applying the electroless nickel plating on the surface of the rack, thereby, a magnetic disk device with high reliability through its life can be obtained.
