PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for changing the brightness of an image. SOLUTION: The method of changing the brightness of an image includes: Steps 10, 12 for obtaining a level incremental rate, which denotes the degree to which the brightness of three input color components will be increased according to a determined color gamut; Step 14 for scaling the input color components using the level incremental rate and determining the results of the obtained scaling as incremental values of the input color components; a step for obtaining a fourth color component value using the incremental values: and Step 16 for obtaining output color components, the brightness of which are increased from those of the input color components, using the fourth color component value and the incremental values. Thus, the input color components are prevented from clipping; and a problem decreasing purity when the brightness of the output image is increased by adding the fourth color components is resolved. As a result, the output image increased only the brightness with the same color and purity as those of the input color components retaining can be obtained to be able to simply convert the three input color components into the four output color components.
