PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new recoil starter for an internal combustion engine having a center shaft formed by connecting the tip of a center main shaft with an auxiliary shaft having a mounting function of a retainer, a setting function of a brake spring, and a compensating function of the length of the center spindle. SOLUTION: The center main shaft is disposed in a starter case, the tip of the center main shaft is connected with the auxiliary shaft for compensating the length of the center main shaft and forming the center shaft, the retainer is mounted to the tip of the auxiliary shaft, and a coil spring for a brake in a compressed state is inserted between the retainer and the auxiliary shaft.
