PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a material for a plastic optical waveguide that is excellent in electrical properties, heat resistance and transparency and can achieve manufacture of a low-priced and large-area optical waveguide. SOLUTION: The material for a plastic optical waveguide comprises a polybenzoxazole resin having a structure in which a polybenzoxazole precursor having a repeating unit represented by formula (1) is ring-closed (in formula (1), 'a' denotes an integer of 1 to 1,000; X and Y each independently denote a divalent organic group; and R<SB>1</SB>and R<SB>2</SB>are each independently a hydrogen atom or a monovalent organic group).
