PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sensor for dividing a connecting part in a fiber tow into a knot and a seam and detecting the connecting part before continuously feeding the fiber tow into the next step treatment apparatus. SOLUTION: A thickness sensor 11 for detecting a thickness of the connecting part during traveling on the upstream side of the next step treatment apparatus and a width sensor 12 for detecting a change of a width direction in the fiber tow during traveling are provided on the upstream of the next step treatment apparatus and whether the detected connecting part 20 is the knot or the seam is distinguished based on the difference of the thickness of the fiber tow 1 in the knot and the thickness of the fiber tow 1 in the seam by the thickness sensor. When it is detected that an increase of the width of the fiber tow 1, seam is detected as the connecting part 20. When the knot is detected, operation of the next step treatment apparatus is stopped and when the seam is detected, a conveying speed in the next step treatment apparatus is decelerated for a prescribed time.
