PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a luminescent material that can emit light of much higher luminance than that from the conventional material by uniformly dispersing particles of rare earth metal or transition metal that constitutes the luminescence centers in the aluminate matrix. SOLUTION: The high-luminance luminescent material comprises single crystal particles of complex oxides including aluminum solid solution of at least one of metal selected from rare earth metals and transition metals as an emission center metal. In the production of the high-luminance luminescent material, an aluminum soluble salt for constituting complex oxide that includes the aluminum to be the matrix, soluble salts of the other metals, and at least one soluble salt of a metal selected from rare earth metals and transition metals for constituting the emission center are dissolved in the solvent at an atomic ratio responding to individual metals in the aluminum-including complex oxide to prepare the solution including these salts. Then, the resultant solution is atomized in a reductive atmosphere, heated over the crystallization temperature of the complex oxide to form the spherical particles of single crystal spherical whereby the high-luminance luminescent material is produced.
