PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method capable of measuring the shape of light transmittable matter and capable of also accurately measuring the volume of matter having a complicated shape, and to provide an apparatus therefor. SOLUTION: Light such as non-scattering light or the like is emitted to the matter 13 to be measured placed on a tray having a mirror surface or an almost mirror surface from a light source 5 or a surface light source 12 to irradiate the matter 13 to be measured. The variable density image generated by the shift of reflected light or the deterioration of transmitted light of the matter 13 to be measured is observed by a camera 9 and processed by a personal computer to measure the shape of the matter 13 to be measured. The matter 13 to be measured is hermetically closed by a cover container 4 with a cylinder, and the indication of pressure at a time when the volume or pressure in the cover container 4 is changed, or the indication of a concentration change at a time when a difinite amount of diffused matter is injected in the cover container 4 is measured to measure the volume of the matter 13 to be measured.
