PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a rubber composition with gas barrier properties by homogeneously dispersing clay in a rubber by a simple and easy method. SOLUTION: This rubber composition is prepared by dispersing clay in a mixture of a rubber latex and a water-soluble aminosilane coupling agent. Clay immersed in water in advance is mixed with the latex; to the resultant mixture, the coupling agent is added; and then, the mixture is dried. The clay is preferably montmorillonite. The latex is preferably an acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber, a styrene-butadiene rubber, a butyl rubber, or a natural rubber. The coupling agent is preferably N-β(aminoethyl)γ-aminopropylmethyldimethoxysilane, N-β(aminoethyl)γ-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane, N-β(aminoethyl)γ- aminopropyltriethoxysilane,γ-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane, orγ- aminopropyltriethoxysilane.
