<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize excellent color separation characteristics and color reproducibility in an image display device which has a plurality of spatial optical modulating elements made to correspond to respective colors and an illumination optical system illuminating those spatial optical modulating elements. <P>SOLUTION: The device has: a dichroic prism 5 which applies color separation to the illumination light from the illumination optical system and guides the resultant light to the respective spatial optical modulating elements 3R, 3G, and 3B and synthesizes reflected lights from those spatial optical modulating elements 3R, 3G, and 3B; and a projection lens 6 which images the projection light from the dichroic prism 5. A phase difference plate stack 7 arranged in the optical path from the illumination optical system 2 to the dichroic prism 5 polarizes a portion of a wavelength band of the illumination light which is transmitted through a reflecting surface of the dichroic prism 5 into a P- polarized light and a portion of a wavelength band which is reflected by the reflecting surface into an S-polarized light. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO</p> |
