PURPOSE:To improve the operability of the titled device especially at the time of mounting a telephoto lens by driving a lens immediately when a defocused value after the detection of a focus is < a prescribed value, and when the defocused value is >= the prescribed value, inhibiting the lens driving. CONSTITUTION:When a focus detecting result based upon a sensor device SNS reaches a focus or close to the focus, a microcomputer PRS immediately drives the lens LNS when the defocused value is within the prescribed value, and if the value exceeds the prescribed value, inhibits the lens driving for the 1st prescribed time from the focusing point or a point of time close to the focusing point. When an object is searched at a low contrast, the searching operation is inhibited during the 2nd prescribed time longer than the 1st prescribed time. Consequently, focusing improved at its operability especially at the time of mounting the telephoto lens can be attained.
