Method and apparatus for racing a plurality of competitors

In a method of racing a plurality of competitors, such as in a coin-operated simulated horse race, at least one of the competitors is arranged to move from a start to a finish position in a non-linear progression. The embodiments provide for the simulated race to be divided into a plurality of stages with the competitor starting a stage at a determined position and the position for that competitor at the end of the stage being randomly established. The race can be enacted on a display screen 4 with a background image 16 being moved in direction of arrow B whilst the horses 14 appear to move in direction A with their relative order being affected by the positions determined at start and finish of stages.
