<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve problems that most of the current vaccination strategies still use relatively crude preparations such as attenuated or inactivated viruses and the vaccines often generate both antibody- and cell-mediated immunities, and that the type of generated immune response cannot be modulated. <P>SOLUTION: Short-chain peptides modeled on high-affinity immunomodulatory self peptides (which are preferably nonallelically restricted) are introduced into antigen presenting cells (APCs) of a patient in therapeutic methods.
