PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sheet feeder in which a sheet is fed more efficiently up to the print start position when print data includes an upper margin. SOLUTION: A printer has a first sheet feed operation mode for feeding a sheet by a first amount from the detecting position of a sheet detecting means to a specified heading position before print data is received, and a second sheet feed operation mode for feeding the sheet after receiving the print data. In the second sheet feed operation mode, presence of an upper margin is detected after the print data is received (S110) and then the amount of upper margin is analyzed (S120). Subsequently, sheet feed operation is started (S130) and a decision is made whether the forward end of the sheet is detected or not (S140). When the forward end is detected, a counter is reset to start counting of the number of steps of a sheet feed motor (S150). Finally, a decision is made whether the count has reached the sum (C=L+M) of the amount of upper margin and the number of steps of the first sheet feeding amount (S160) and sheet feed is stopped if the sum is reached (S170).
