In a dark environment, light emitted by a fluorescent tube <HIL><PDAT>301 <PDAT>enters a liquid crystal panel by a light guide plate <HIL><PDAT>302<PDAT>, is transmitted through a transflective electrode <HIL><PDAT>102 <PDAT>after passing through a polarizer <HIL><PDAT>114 <PDAT>and a retardation plate <HIL><PDAT>113<PDAT>, and is introduced into a liquid crystal layer <HIL><PDAT>50 <PDAT>following coloration of light by a color filter <HIL><PDAT>104<PDAT>. The light introduced into the liquid crystal layer <HIL><PDAT>50 <PDAT>is emitted at an observation side of the liquid crystal panel through the retardation plate <HIL><PDAT>213 <PDAT>and the polarizer <HIL><PDAT>214 <PDAT>sequentially. On the other hand, in a bright environment, light from the observation side passes through the polarizer <HIL><PDAT>214 <PDAT>and the liquid crystal layer <HIL><PDAT>50<PDAT>, and is reflected at the transflective electrode <HIL><PDAT>102 <PDAT>following coloration of light by the color filter <HIL><PDAT>104<PDAT>, whereby the light is emitted at the observation side.</PTEXT>
