A vehicle body for a passenger car which can be manufactured within the scope of a common basic design in two variants, namely firstly as a version of a sloping rear with a tailgate and secondly as a stepped-rear version, consists essentially of outer and inner side walls and a roof which connects these parts at the top, the side walls and essentially also the roof being constructed for both vehicle variants in accordance with the sloping-rear version and it being possible to attach an additional rear part to the back in order to provide the stepped-rear version. The additional rear part is constructed as a stepped-rear module and can be welded to the rear edges of the outer side walls on both sides. The welding connection points can be covered from the outside by panelling components. By means of a vehicle body with the aforesaid features, the production expenditure for stepped-rear and sloping-rear models which can be industrially manufactured on the basis of a common basic design can be substantially reduced.
